Army vs Navy

Army vs Navy: The most celebrated tradition in college football will continue in 2018 when the Navy vs Army Football Game finishes the regular season on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. The two historic rivals will meet for the 119th time with Navy leading the all-time series 60-51-7. Army won last season’s meeting 14-13.

The annual Army vs Navy football game is an event unlike any other in college athletics.  The series between the two military academies has a long, storied history dating back to its first game in 1890. It’s been played 128 times, mostly in Philadelphia, but also all over the country, including stops in New York, Baltimore, Chicago and Pasadena, California.

The game has featured college students that have gone on to be heroes, generals and even president. Only those who participate truly understand the significance. USA TODAY asked a former player from each team to share what the game means to him.

Army: Army enters the 2018 college football season in the midst of its best stretch in over 20 years. The Knights finished the 2017 season with a record of 10-3, giving them an overall record of 18-8 the last two seasons. The last time Army had a two-year stretch to even compare to this one was in 1995-96, when it went 15-7-1. The Knights have also defeated Navy in two straight games, giving Army its first two-game winning streak against its rival since it won five straight from 1992-96.

Navy: Ken Niumatalolo is the winningest coach in Navy history, posting a record of 84-48 in his 132 games at the school. That’s 29 more wins than George Welsh (1973-1981) had as the second-winningest coach in program history. Niumatalolo also has the second-highest winning percentage (.636) of any Navy coach to have coached at least 50 games at the school (Eddie Erdelatz, 1950-58: .643). All of which likely means a lot to Niumatalolo, but not as much as ending a two-game losing streak to Army would.

Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Knights. Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA. When: Saturday, December 8, 3:00 PM. ET. The Army Knights will be trying to extend their winning streak against the Navy Midshipmen to games when they face off in their annual rivalry game on Saturday afternoon.

Wake Forest vs Florida State

Wake Forest vs Florida State: After two weeks on the road, Florida St. is heading back home. Their bye week comes to an end as they meet up with Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. If the point spread is to be believed, Florida St. are looking at one of their easiest games of the year.

Florida St. had victory within their grasp but couldn’t quite capture it two weeks ago as the squad lost 27-28 to Miami (Fla.). Meanwhile, Wake Forest came into their this week averaging 38.2 points per game, but Wake Forest fell well short of that average, and it cost them. They were completely outmatched, falling 3-63 to Clemson. Wake Forest were in a tough position by the half, with the score sitting at 0-28.

With the two teams each stumbling in off of a defeat, both will be hungry for the win. Wake Forest’s offensive line will need to gear up for a tough test against a Florida St. defensive front that amassed five sacks against Miami (Fla.), so we’ll see if they are up to the task.

Florida State football returns home after a close loss to in-state rival Miami Hurricanes to take on Wake Forest as it pursues a bowl bid.
It’s been 35 consecutive seasons. The longest active bowl streak in college football is 35 seasons and the odds of that streak continuing are looking bleaker and bleaker as the weeks pass on.

Last season was saved by a rescheduled game against Louisiana-Monroe but this year it seems to be a struggle to even reach five wins. The game against Wake this weekend will be huge for the 3-3 Noles because this is the easiest game they have moving forward and even then it’s not that simple.

After Wake Forest, Florida State will have to take on No. 3 Clemson, travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on No. 16 NC State, head to South Bend to take on No. 4 Notre Dame, return home to face Boston College and finish the year off at home against No. 11 Florida. This game becomes a must-win spot for the Noles as well as the Boston College game and one of these other games they will have to secure an upset.

Akron vs Kent State

Akron vs Kent State: Kent State defense is fine on third downs, but that’s about it. It can’t move the ball, and there’s no passing game to keep up if the Zips score early. Akron will be in turnover margin, it’ll convert on the mistakes, and the defense hold time and again on the way to the MAC title game.

But Kent State is overdue for something positive in a lost season. Outside of a win over Miami University, it’s been a nightmare of a time in blowout loss after blowout loss. The Golden Flashes have lost four straight, and with all nine losses by double-digits. But screwing up the Zips would make the year.

So how is this happening? What is Akron doing right? It’s converting more third down plays than anyone in the MAC, it’s not turning the ball over, and it’s able to come up with just enough late stops to survive. Kent State’s defense is fine on third downs, but that’s about it. It can’t move the ball, and there’s no passing game to keep up if the Zips score early.

And in truth, every team runs into one or two of these games a year. One where areas of strength turn into weaknesses on a given afternoon, or where a slew of turnovers doom the chances of pulling off a win. The Bobcats have seen plenty of examples. Take the home loss to CMU last year. Or the road loss late last year at Akron.

Turnovers wiping out scoring chances, or setting up the opposition. A big play yielded to gift the opposition a touchdown. A late-game drive to salvage the day, but it’s wiped out. Only this time, the Bobcats finished it. Backed into a corner after an early 14-0 deficit, Ohio played nearly flawlessly — big picture wise — over the final quarter and a half to save a 27-26 win at Kent State.

Ohio didn’t have a plethora of big offensive plays, but instead turned a paltry 58 offensive snaps into six red-zone possessions. And after three straight turnovers in the red zone — a crusher for any team in any conference usually — the Bobcats executed three touchdown drives on its last three possessions to save the day. And the defense, much maligned for most of 2018, held the Flashes to three straight field goals on similar scoring chances in the second half.

Penn State vs Indiana

Penn State vs Indiana: The Penn State Nittany Lions hope to get back on track as they visit the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday afternoon. Penn State dropped their second straight game as they were beaten 21-17 at home by Michigan State last Saturday. A pair of teams from the East Division of the Big Ten take the field in the Hoosier State in a week 8 contest.

Penn State had a bye week after losing to Ohio State at home but it didn’t matter. Another last-minute meltdown doomed the Nittany Lions with the winning touchdown coming with just 25 seconds to play. Penn State is 24-5 in their last 29 games but their five losses have all been bitter ones as they’ve come by a combined 12 points.

Indiana started the season with three straight wins but has dropped three of four after getting clubbed by Iowa. The Hoosiers now look to get back in the win column and avoid falling to the .500 mark on the season. Indiana was beaten handily in the total offense department by a 479-330 margin, gave up 26 first downs to their 22 and lost the time of possession battle 33:10 to 26:50 in the contest.

Penn State has been burned their last two games by fourth quarter miscues that ended up costing them dearly. The Nittany Lions had their chances to put those games in the win column but inevitably saw them slip through their fingers. Facing an Indiana team that was just carved up through the air by Iowa has to give them a reason to be confident. McSorley should be able to have a solid game facing the Indiana defense and that should be enough to lead the Nittany Lions to a win here.

In the Penn State Nittany Lions’ last two meetings against the Indiana Hoosiers, Saquon Barkley was limited to less than 60 yards in each contest. Indiana was maybe the best team in the Big Ten when it came to consistently slowing Saquon Barkley during his Penn State days, and linebacker play was a big reason why.

Colorado vs Washington

Colorado vs Washington: action here as the Colorado Buffaloes travel to the northwest to take on the Washington Huskies. Both teams absolutely need the game after losses, and the game will have massive implications for the Pac 12 standings. The last time these two teams met, Washington beat them down 37-10.

The Buffs were one of the biggest surprises in college football in 2018 when they jumped out to a 5-0 start and launched themselves into the top 25 polls. Many called them phony at the time because they hadn’t beaten anyone difficult, and they didn’t exactly prove the doubters wrong last week in an 11 point loss to USC.

Colorado did play an extremely easy early-season schedule, but now I think they’re actually being underrated. They have an experienced quarterback in Steven Montez, and have the talent to compete with any team in the country.

Washington is coming off a tough three point loss to Oregon that all-but insured the Pac 12 will be shutout of the College Football Playoff again. It moved them to 5-2 after they already lost to Auburn during the non-conference slate. It’s a quick turnaround for the game, and they’ll have to make sure they don’t show up with a hangover from the Oregon loss.

Washington’s main concern for this game is their health. They could potentially be without a slew of key contributors on both sides of the ball, and their injury updates will definitely bear monitoring. Washington has one of the most experienced signal callers in the league, but Jake Browning hasn’t really lived up to expectations.

Both teams have talented defenses, and both teams have major injuries on offense. If the Buffs’ receiving corp continues to be as banged up as it looks, they may have no choice but to run the ball a ton. If that’s the case, this could turn into a pretty slow-paced game, and one without a ton of scoring. With two conference opponents who are very familiar with each other, I like the under quite a bit.

The Clemson Tigers football team will host the N.C. State Wolfpack on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018. Here is a preview and score prediction for the ACC game. NC State vs Clemson live The duel of these two quarterbacks and these two offenses has set the stage for an impressive showdown that will award a head-to-head advantage likely to decide who represents the Atlantic in the ACC Championship Game.

If N.C. State is going to have a chance to pull off the upset, it will have to slow down Clemson’s defensive front. The Tigers have four All-Americans in Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Austin Bryant, and freshman Xavier Thomas is becoming quite the weapon as well. N.C. State’s offensive line got the best of Clemson’s defensive front a season ago.

The Wolfpack rushed for 153 yards and quarterback Ryan Finley attempted 50 passes and was sacked only once as N.C. State put up 31 points in a narrow loss. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney admitted that N.C. State’s offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage in 2017 and challenged Clemson’s defensive front this week to not let that happen again. N.C. State has allowed only two sacks through the first five games of the 2018 season.

The Wolfpack are No. 95 in the nation in rushing at 145 yards per game and rank No. 99 in yards per carry, averaging less than 4 yards per attempt. For comparison, Clemson is No. 4 in rushing yards per game at 281 and No. 2 in yards per carry at almost 7. N.C. State will have to run the ball and keep Clemson’s defense honest to be successful. The Tigers are No. 14 in rushing defense, allowing 108 yards per game. That number is particularly impressive because Clemson has played three option teams.

Alabama vs Tennessee

Alabama vs Tennessee: Fresh off a stunning upset of Auburn, Tennessee will host archrival Alabama on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the SEC on CBS game of the week. The Volunteers feel like they finally have momentum after a tough start to the Jeremy Pruitt era, but Alabama is a well-oiled machine and Tua Tagovailoa, who is coming off an injury in his last game but expected to play Saturday, already looks like the best quarterback of the Nick Saban era in Tuscaloosa.

Hunt is the founder and CEO of Football Gameplan, which has been supplying analysis of all levels of football since 2007. The former collegiate running back joined SportsLine in 2016 and has put his stamp on college football.

His expertise has earned him the nickname “The Czar of the Playbook,” and Hunt already has spent endless hours breaking down the rosters of FBS clubs. With this selection, he is looking to build on an incredible 5-1 mark on picks involving Tennessee. Anyone who has followed him is up big.

Hunt knows Alabama enters as more than a four-touchdown favorite thanks to a dominant first seven games of the season. The Tide own the top scoring offense in all of college football and Tagovailoa is the runaway favorite to win the Heisman Trophy with half the season gone.

Against a Tennessee defense that gave up 322 yards to Jarrett Stidham last week and 429 yards to Will Grier in Week 1, Tagovailoa should have ample opportunity to move the ball despite exiting last week’s game against Missouri with a knee injury. He has been a full participant in practice this week and has indicated that he expects to be under center Saturday.

However, this is still a rivalry game and the Vols come into Week 8 with a hot hand of their own after picking up a big SEC road victory against a ranked Auburn team.

Tennessee is coming off by far its best performance of the year and Jarrett Guarantano has proved that he’s a legitimate SEC quarterback. Guarantano is the No. 4-rated passer in the conference, and the closest thing Alabama has to a weakness this season has been its pass defense. That group has surrendered 10 of the 13 touchdowns Alabama has given up all season, so if Guarantano can land a few big plays and get the Volunteers into the end zone, it’s going to make 29 a big number to cover.

We can tell you Hunt is leaning toward the over, but his much stronger play is on the side. He has identified the crucial x-factor that makes one side of the spread a must-back.

Utah State vs Wyoming

Utah State vs Wyoming: A Mountain West rematch between the Utah State Aggies and the Wyoming Cowboys will take place at Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming on Wednesday, 9 pm EST. Utah State has already brought back three interceptions to the house. The Aggies are ranked in the top 15 among FBS programs in sacks and tackles for loss per game.

All of a sudden, Utah State has gone from looking like the easy choice to bring up the rear in the Mountain Division to a possible bowl team. Wyoming might be a disappointment overall, but it’s still unbeaten in conference play. Granted, the Cowboys are just 1-0, but they do have a win over Hawaii.

This now becomes the breakthrough moment for one of these teams. With a road game at Boise State up next, Wyoming needs to win this. However, after the next two weeks, outside of the Colorado State game, the schedule eases up. Utah State just lost to the Rams, but the offense has shown enough at times to be dangerous.

The Aggies are surviving on takeaways, timely offense, and explosion against the bad defenses. But there’s no pass rush, and the O line has been very, very shaky. Wyoming can’t get the offense moving – Josh Allen has been a dud – but the defensive front is able to get into the backfield and should do enough to bother Kent Myers and the Aggie attack.

The Cowboys are great when it comes to turnover margin, too. Utah State won’t be the +2 it’ll need to be. The difference will be the UW defensive line that’ll come through when it has to.

Wyoming is very strong defensively and they should make it difficult for Utah State to move the ball, especially in the air. While Utah State has been scoring points, they have faced some weak defensive teams in their last few games, and they have struggled against strong defensive teams, scoring 10 points against both Wisconsin and Wake Forest. Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen has yet to really find his groove, however, he is a great talent and should move the ball against Utah State’s weak defense.

After narrowly losing to Marshall, Miami has been atrocious — especially on offense — over the last two games, scoring just three points combined against Cincinnati and Minnesota. On the flip side, they’ve allowed 27.3 points per game. That wouldn’t be very bad if their offense wasn’t incredibly lackluster. One major problem is they’re one-sided with just 79 rush yards per game.

Bowling Green allows 46 points and 522.3 total yards per game, which has been a major contributor to their 1-2 start this season. The rushing defense has been the biggest failure, allowing teams on average to rush for 348.3 yards per game, which is astonishing. Similar to their opponent in this game, their running attack has been abysmal.

Both teams are also just 1-5 against the spread with Bowling Green getting 34.5 points against Oregon (and lost by 34 points). Obviously, somebody has to beat the spread, and the advantage is with BGSU as they have a better offense and are getting the points at home.

The Bowling Green Falcons hit the road to take on the Miami Ohio Redhawks for a Saturday afternoon contest. Bowling Green is desparately searching for their first win of the season. The team has been poor on both sides of the ball as they are averaging 16 points and allowing just over 35 points a game.

Northwestern vs Rutgers

Northwestern vs Rutgers: Northwestern looks to keep things rolling and maintain its hold on first place in the Big Ten West Division when it travels to Piscataway, New Jersey, to face a Rutgers team that hasn’t won since Sept. The Wildcats are coming off of back-to-back victories against Michigan State and Nebraska to claim a slim lead in the division while the Scarlet Knights haven’t won since beating Texas State in their season opener.

Well look at who’s leading the Big Ten West? It might have been a bit of a shaky run, and it took an epic comeback to get by a winless Nebraska team, but it’s all right there for the Wildcats. Win this, beat Wisconsin the following week, and First, just hit the three-foot putt.

Rutgers has gone from awful to a whole other level of misery, getting destroyed last week by Maryland with a passing game that completed a grand total of two passes for 17 yards and eight scores … and five picks. The Northwestern offense is still having issues trying to find a running game with running back Jeremy Larkin done, but this week, it’s not going to take a whole lot to put this game away.

Rutgers has the least-efficient passing game in the country, has the second-worst offense, and is dead last in turnover margin. As long as Clayton Thorson can lead the way to a few early scoring drives, the defense should be able to take care of the rest. No. 1 in the nation in fewest penalties, and with a passing game that kicked it in when it had to over the last few games, the Wildcats aren’t going to screw up enough for Rutgers to pull this off.

No, really. Northwestern’s running game really, really, really isn’t there anymore. It got progressively worse over the first five games, and then it bumped back up again against Nebraska – running for just 32 yards. Even with Larkin, the ground game just didn’t work, and now it’s totally gone, averaging one yard per carry over the last three games.

As bad as Rutgers has been, it’s been losing because it can’t handle decent ground games. Illinois – who hasn’t been able to do much of anything on anyone – and Maryland each finished with under 90 passing yards. That was by choice, though, with a ground attack that was working too well.

Northwestern isn’t going to walk in and blow up for 50 points. If Rutgers can get to Thorson, and if they can force him to hurry his throws a bit and not get into a rhythm, this has the potential to be a tight battle into the fourth as long as the RU O doesn’t start screwing up and turning it over.
