Illinois vs Wisconsin

Illinois vs Wisconsin:  Wisconsin might be the only Big Ten team to play worse than Illinois did last week. Rutgers was worse than both of them, but that’s not the point. While Wisconsin has gone back to being a heavy favorite this week in its tussle with Illinois, the buzz among Badgers fans certainly has dwindled after last week’s loss at Michigan.

The Illini offense was stuffed by Purdue in a 46-7 loss, but for the most part, the ground game has been terrific so far with over 200 yards in every other game. Mobile quarterbacks are an issue for the the Badgers, and AJ Bush has the ability to be a 100-yard threat, even if the Iowa linebackers bottled him up last week.

The Illini secondary needs to come up with a slew of big plays and force mistakes, and it has to hope the Alex Hornibrook that played in Ann Arbor last Saturday night shows up in Madison.

Illinois allows completed passes, but it also makes a ton of interceptions with 11 so far on the year. Coming off a 7-of-20 day for 100 yards with a score and two picks – and after a mediocre game against Nebraska before that – Hornibrook has to prove himself all over again.

It’s not exactly going to be a cathartic moment for the Badgers after the nuclear meltdown against Michigan, they’ll look the part again.

The running game will get things going, and then it’ll be Hornibrook, Hornibrook, Hornibrook, and the goal will be to get the running game back on track.

Illinois doesn’t have any sort of a passing game to take advantage of the mediocre Badger secondary, and it’s going to be a long, long day against a run defense that will be fine.

The Temple Owls have won their last two games and three of their last four contests. They will be going for their third consecutive win against the Bearcats. In their last game, the Owls defeated Penn 60-51. The team played especially well on the defensive end, holding the Quakers to 28 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from three point range.

Ryan Betley and A.J. Brodeur each scored 12 points, while Caleb Wood added 10 points for the Quakers, who finished the game with three players scoring in double figures. Offensively the Owls weren’t at their best but did enough to get the win. Temple shot 41 percent from the field and 43 percent from three point range.

Obi Enechionyia had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Shizz Alston Jr. added 14 points for the Owls, who finished the game with two players scoring in double figures. If Temple wants to defeat Cincinnati, they will need to play much better on the offensive end.

The Bearcats have been dominant in recent weeks and have won their last 10 contests. They will try to make it 11 in a row when they face the Owls. In their last game, the Bearcats routed East Carolina 86-60. They held the Pirates to 42 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from three point range.

Shawn Williams and Isaac Fleming had 15 points and three rebounds each, while Kentrell Berkley added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates, who finished the game with three players scoring in double figures.

The Bearcats finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 35 percent from three point range. Gary Clark finished the game with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Kyle Washington and Jacob Evans added 17 points each for the Bearcats, who finished the game with four players scoring in double figures. If the Bearcats can put up at least 80 points on the Owls, they will be able to keep their winning streak going.

Maryland vs Iowa

Maryland vs Iowa: Maryland has an explosive offense, and that should be concerning for Iowa. However, the Hawkeyes have one of the better defenses in the country, and that is a primary key in this game. Maryland is one of only eight teams in the country to have scored on every red zone this season.

When the Maryland running game works, everything else falls into place. There’s no passing attack to help the cause, but the Terps ripped through Bowling Green, Minnesota and Rutgers, and they managed to come up with wins. They have to come out and establish themselves right away and keep on pounding.

Ty Johnson and Anthony McFarland forma strong 1-2 punch, there aren’t a slew of turnovers – Maryland leads all Big Ten teams with just five giveaways – and they have a nice blend of quickness and power. To pull this off, Maryland has to get to at least 150 rushing yards – preferably, closer to 200 – and be at least a +2 in turnover margin. The team is converting on everything and every decent drive – it leads the nation in red zone offense.

It would be nice if the secondary can bring it for a second straight week, holding down the Rutgers passing game to a 2-of-17 day for eight yards and five picks. That’s not going to happen again, but the secondary is great at taking the ball away. Maryland doesn’t have enough of a passing game to pick of the slack if it doesn’t run well right away.

Iowa is playing too well over the last two games, with the defense doing a phenomenal job against the run and Stanley red hot at the moment. The Hawkeyes will get up early, and the Terps won’t be able to get back in the game. The Maryland D won’t force enough big mistakes to pull off the road win.

Oklahoma vs TCU

Oklahoma vs TCU: The Oklahoma Sooners have had a week to think about their devastating loss to Texas, but they returned to the top 10 of the college football rankings while they were on bye and will now travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU on Saturday as part of the Week 8 college football schedule.

The Sooners are 8-point favorites with the total up to 61.5 in the latest Oklahoma vs TCU for the noon ET kickoff. Can Kyler Murray and the Sooners begin a new charge towards the top of the college football rankings, or will Gary Patterson’s stingy TCU defense be able to hold them off at home? Before you make any Oklahoma vs. TCU picks or predictions, you’re going to want to hear what college football guru Barrett Sallee has to say.

Sallee knows that for Oklahoma, it will be difficult to gauge whether the bye week was beneficial. Was the extra week helpful in dealing with such a devastating last-second defeat or was it just extra time for the frustration to marinate?

The good news is that Oklahoma should have a decided advantage against TCU when it comes to taking care of the football. Kyler Murray has done a great job at protecting the ball on his way to huge numbers (over 2,100 yards of total offense and 26 touchdowns in just six games)/ Oklahoma has turned the ball over just six times all season, while TCU has committed a stunning 15 turnovers.

But just because Oklahoma’s offense is firing on all cylinders with Murray under center doesn’t mean it can cover an 8-point spread against TCU. Despite the fact that the Horned Frogs are just 3-3, they’ve been competitive against a tough schedule. They held an Iowa State squad to less than 200 yards and held a high-powered Texas Tech offense to just 17 points in a losing effort.

Sallee also knows TCU has been particularly stingy on its true home field. The Horned Frogs have allowed just 245.3 yards per game to opponents at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Sallee has analyzed TCU vs. Oklahoma from every possible angle and while we can tell you he’s leaning over, he has discovered a crucial x-factor that makes one side of the spread a must-back.

Michigan vs Michigan State

Michigan State vs Michigan will kick off at noon Saturday in East Lansing. It’s been one of the best rivalries in college football since Jim Harbaugh arrived in Ann Arbor. At No. 6 in the country, it might seem like Michigan is already a national championship contender. But until it can get past Michigan State, it hasn’t earned that title.

The Wolverines have struggled to get past the Spartans the past few years when Harbaugh had them on the brink of championship contention. This year, all that can be put to rest with a win in East Lansing. If Michigan carries a seven-game winning streak into the bye, with wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State, it will be squarely in the mix for a Big Ten title and the College Football Playoff.

Michigan State always plays its best game as an underdog — just like James Franklin and Penn State, which had its conference title hopes crushed last weekend. Michigan has enough talent to handle Michigan State, but that’s been the case multiple times throughout the last few years. MSU always plays its best game in this rivalry, and it’s time for Michigan to return the favor.

Michigan played one of the ugliest games of the Harbaugh era against Michigan State last year, committing five turnovers, dropping passes and ultimately losing at home as a huge favorite. This season, the offense is much improved, and if the Wolverines can fix those mistakes, they should be in good shape.

It’s on the road. It’s a rivalry game. It’s Michigan State. Those have been three thorns in Michigan’s side over the last decade. Combine them with the fact that MSU is coming off a road win against Penn State and this weekend is shaping up to be a difficult test. The Wisconsin win was huge for Michigan, but one over Michigan State would be even bigger.
